Azuarc's level guide, Act 13: Un'goro/Plaguelands (51-52)

As was stated at the end of act 12, your goal right now is to get yourself to level 51. The previous section of the guide ended with the character at about 49, and offered a few suggestions for what to do to get at least most of the way through level 50. The foremost among these is going to Blasted Lands. The two blood elves at the zone entrance offer repeatable quests involving parts of the creatures in the area. Whether you do that, or go to Azshara, or run instances such as Sunken Temple or Maraudon, or finish the quests in Searing Gorge, or anything else of your invention is up to you.

It should be noted that at level 50, every class has a quest available from their trainer. That quest sends them to a far-flung place to talk to someone who gives a small quest in the area, and then sends you into Sunken Temple. Some of the rewards for this quest series are rather unique, so you may want to do these at some point (even if not right away.)

But hereafter, we go to Un'goro Crater, Western Plaguelands, and Felwood. So make sure you have the quest Un'Goro Soil from Darnassus, and bring a mithril casing with you if it's not too much out of your wallet. Oh yeah, and bring bandages if you need them – there are absolutely no humanoids to kill there.

Scene 1: Un'goro Crater Overture (level 50/51)

Un'goro Crater is the most featureless circle of a zone in the game…and yet, somehow it's utterly packed with quests. Here's a map to illustrate:

And because it's so featureless, I will have to resort to locating things by coordinates fairly often.
You should already have these quests:

Go to Gadgetzan and head to the southwest corner of Tanaris. Just north of Thistleshrub Valley is a long ramp that leads down into the crater. Shortly after you enter the zone, there will be a Tauren, Torwa Pathfinder, on the right. He has two quests.

After that, go northwest a bit into the Marshlands. There are raptors everywhere here, but we have two specific objectives. The first is to get to the threshadon carcass for Torwa at (68,56), and the other is to locate a raft at (63,68). For you non-coordinate types, the raft is in the southern pool of water that sticks out most to the west, and the carcass is in the large clearing in the center of the Marshlands. When you find the raft, you will also need to dive into the small pool of water it is next to and find a bag at the bottom. Along the way you will encounter a number of different ground spawns:

1. Un'goro Soil: Always pick these up.

2. Power Crystals: Get 7 of each color and stop.

3. Bloodpetal Sprouts: Get multiples of 15 for a meaningless repeatable quest if you want.

If you've picked up Williden's Journal as a drop, you're probably up to about 10 "quest items" by now including the crystals and sprouts and your Mithril Casing. Bag space is always an issue in this zone. Fortunately, the next place we're heading is "town".

Go all the way north along the east wall, and THEN go west. At about 12 o'clock, in the outer wall, is Marshal's Refuge. You'll find Karna Remtravel out in front of the entrance.

Watch out for T-rexes along the way. They're super sneaky.

Quests completed: It's a Secret to Everybody 1-2, Williden's Journal

Flight points: Marshal's Refuge

Scene 2: Of Apes and Amy (level 51)

Pick up every quest you can find here, including the one off the signpost and from the gnome in the back of the crystal cave. You will find a lot of scattered quest givers in the refuge, so poke around. Altogether, your Un'goro quest log should look like:

And that aside, leave the refuge and head east to the ape cave, Fungal Rock. Fight apes outside the cave until you have all the pelts you need. Be careful around the cave mouth. When you have what you need, head inside and stay to the right. You'll see A-Me 01, who you can activate with a mithril casing. Talk to A-Me, and guide her out of the cave and back to Marshal's Refuge. For this to be successful, it's fairly important that you have done a fresh clear of the entrance beforehand. When the glut of normal spawns and wanderers hits you at a pace not of your choosing, you're pretty well screwed.

Quests completed: Chasing A-Me 01

Scene 3: A Tour of Un'goro (level 51)

This will be a long journey. We have some quests to turn in to Torwa Pathfinder in the southeast, but we also have much else to do. It's time to explore the zone a little bit.

First of all, if you haven't found all the power crystals you need yet, bumble about until you do, and bring them back to J.D. in the cave to get 3 new quests. Different crystal colors are more prevalent in different sections of the zone, but you should be close enough to just finish by bumbling.

Then leave the Refuge to the east. About halfway between Marshal's Refuge and Fungal Rock, high up in the wall, will be the northern crystal pylon. You may or may not be able to see it from the ground, but these outcroppings and ridges often hide pterrordax, and there is one pylon on each wall except the southern edge. This happens to be our first goal.

Leave southeast, and head for the coordinates (68,37). At that point, about 2:00 and a bit off the wall, you will find a tent with a crate of foodstuffs to recover for Expedition Salvation. From there go southeast to the Eastern Pylon. It's at due 3:00. Finally finish the trek to the south to talk to Torwa about the two quests you did for him. He'll have new tasks for you to carry out. Go out into the raptor-filled areas and find some eggs to step on so you can kill the mates of Lar'Korwi. Return to him once you have two scent glands.

West of the raptors is the Slithering Scar, home to the Gor'ishi tribe of Silithids. Don't go in the hive, but kill a few of the bugs in the area until you get a Gorishi Scent Gland for Bungle in the Jungle. While you're here, head onto a few of the southern ridges and kill your standard Pterrordaxes. The Frenzied will wait since they're level 54, but we can knock these out awhile.

In the southwest corner of the zone is Terror Run. This isn't an especially fun place, so here's what we're after: (1) we want dinosaur bones and probably don't have enough yet from diemetradon kills, (2) we want to find the expedition research equipment, and (3) we want to reach the western pylon. The dino bones used to be all over, but don't seem to be nearly as prevalent, so you may want to just kill diemetradons for them. The expedition supplies are in the northeast portion of this area, at about (39,66). The western pylon is, well, in the middle of the western wall. Focus on reaching the expedition camp first, and then the pylon, which is due west of the southern edge of Golakka Hot Springs. Do NOT focus on trying to kill anything.

Finally, in the middle of Golakka Hot Springs to the north is a large rock outcropping. Next to this outcropping is a goblin named Krakle with yet another quest for you. After you pick that up, you can finally make the trek back to the refuge.

Quests completed: The Apes of Un'goro, The Fate of Lar'korwi, Expedition Salvation, The Northern Pylon, The Eastern Pylon, The Western Pylon, Making Sense of It All

Scene 4: Clean-up, Aisle 12 (level 51)

There are two kinds of quests left at this point: grinding-based quests you haven't finished yet, and quests you aren't going to do now. Go out and grind up some bloodpetals, pterrordaxes, diemetradons, and also work on Super Sticky in the tar pits. Your best bet for finding diemetradons is just east and south of Fire Plume Ridge.

Return to Marshal's Refuge and then Gadgetzan when you finish.

Quests completed: Shizzle's Flyer, Muigin and Larion, Roll the Bones, Super Sticky, Bungle in the Jungle

Scene 5: Sorrow Hill (level 52)

We've had our fun in Un'goro for now. Switch continents and fly to Southshore. Follow the road that leads out of the zone to the north through Alterac Mountains and into Western Plaguelands. Shortly after entering the zone, you should reach Chillwind Camp on the left side, which will be our base to work from for the time being. There's nowhere to set your hearthstone, so just get used to running back….you can put it in Southshore if you really want to.

There are a few quests in Chillwind, but the only ones you need concern yourself with are Clear the Way and Argent Dawn Commission, and the second one only if you care about getting reputation with the Argent Dawn.

Down the road to the east, you will find Sorrow Hill, where the mobs needed for Clear the Way live. Walk around, killing them. Stay away from the crypt in the southeast past Uther's Tomb and don't go into Andorhol. There is a questgiver inside the house you might consider saying hello to.

Return to Chillwind Camp.

Quests completed: Clear the Way

Flight Points: Chillwind Camp (Eastern Plaguelands)

Scene 6: Felstone Fields Forever (level 52)

The map of the zone might be in order at this point:

Both the west and east roads out of Chillwind lead into Andorhol, which blocks the path to the rest of the Plaguelands. Swim around it to the west and head north to Felstone Field, the western-most of the four farms in WPL. There are two things to do here, and you can do them in either order. In fact because the second one forces you to return later, you can even shelf the first one if you like.

That shelvable task is to access the cauldron in the center. You're going to enter one of two scenarions: the cauldron lord is standing next to the cauldron. Carefully clear to him, kill him, and then access the cauldron. Or, more likely, the cauldron lord is nowhere to be seen. Clear around the cauldron, kill other stuff until he spawns (which likely won't take long,) and then kill him and access the cauldron.

The other objective is in the farmhouse between the silos and the barn. In the bedroom is Janice Felstone, who has become delirious from her time as a ghost, but you need to find a package for her in the barn. Enter the barn carefully – there are 3 mobs in there, and they can all attack you if you don't just pop your head around the corner and fight out in the entranceway. The package is on the ground near the front. You may have to access it to twice to continue with the quest.

Return to Chillwind, or simply move on to the next scene. If you return to Chillwind, you'll need to actually go through Andorhol to go south. (Actually, there's one path around the east that lets you back up.) Otherwise, we're scooting into Eastern Plaguelands next.

Quests Completed: Target: Felstone Field, Better Late Than Never

Scene 7: Tainted Skies are Here Again (level 52)

Cross back over to the north side of Andorhol and follow the road east out of the zone. As soon as you enter the next zone over, Eastern Plaguelands, immediately turn left and follow the river bank to Tirion Fordring. He has three quests you can do in this area. The zone is bleak and forboding, and often challenging, but if you move slowly through the area, it shouldn't be too bad to actually complete two of these three quests. The plaguehound quest might prove more difficult since it requires killing harder targets. Regardless, this stuff is all zone trash, so feel free to go wherever you like to kill it. Just avoid any actual points of interest – there's a lot of high level Scourge around, such as in the tunnel behind Fordring, at the Marris Stead, in the Noxious Glade, in Corin's Crossing, etc. For the mostpart just bumble about in the southwest corner of the zone looking for grubs, bats, and hounds. It's basically focused grinding.

Note: Blizzard appears to have raised the levels on the creatures here since I last leveled through Eastern Plaguelands, but I maintain this is the right time to do these quests, despite the mobs being level 53-55. Just don't get complacent. You will always need to be panning around during fights to make sure there isn't a gargoyle sneaking up behind you. If you do this, you should be fine.

As you progress, there is one other place you will want to visit either before, during, or after these proceedings – Light's Hope Chapel far to the east. It can be a treacherous journey getting there for the first time. Consult the map below and don't go through Corin's Crossing or either chasm. Do not bother getting any quests from LHC; we are just here for the flight point.

The second tier of plaguehounds hang out near LHC, so it's a little tougher in that area, but not tremendously. The frenzied plaguehounds are in the northeast, and you don't want to mess with them. Finish what you can, and leave the rest for later. If that means you hate this place and don't want to do any of it at level 52, then don't. However, I feel the same way about some of the places we're going and think that the extra level you'll get by sticking it out is worth it.

Quests completed: Blood Tinged Skies, Carrion Grubbage, Demon Dogs (partial)

And on to the next (level 53)

The beginning of Act 14 will tell you of an errand you have to run in each of the three Alliance cities before departing for Felwood, so start flying toward Stormwind.

  • Un'goro Soil (Darnassus)
  • Bungle in the Jungle (Gadgetzan)
  • Super Sticky (Gadgetzan)

We will add many more, so make sure your quest log is clear of debris. The other thing to note is that we are going to make some very long involved trips, and there are about 82 million quest items that will be littering your bags, so make sure you clean out any junk you have. Among the things you will be picking up include a bunch of ground spawns such as Un'goro Soil and four different colors of power crystals.

  • Roll the Bones
  • Shizzle's Flyer
  • Alien's Ecology
  • It's a Secret to Everybody 3
  • Muigin and Larion
  • Chasing A-Me 01
  • Crystals of Power
  • Expedition Salvation
  • The Fate of Lar'korwi
  • Beware of Pterrordax
  • Lost!
  • The Apes of Un'goro

So as a note: whenever you see a pterrordax or a diemetradon, kill it. When you complete Shizzle's Flyer, Roll the Bones, and Beware of Pterrordax, you can stop. Whenever you see a bloodpetal, kill it. When you complete Muigin and Larion, you can stop.
