Azuarc's level guide, Act 23: Blade's Edge (68-69)

This guide has gone on for long enough. It's time to end this. Blade's Edge Mountains is a zone designed for levels 65-70, and there is plenty of content to make up two measly levels. And if it isn't, there's two more zones. But it will be.

When you first arrived in Sylvanaar, you should have picked up these quests:

  • Into the Draenethyst Mine
  • Malaise
  • Strange Brew

  • The Bloodmaul Ogres
  • The Den Mother

  • The Encroaching Wilderness

You'll note from the map that everything you're up to right now is in the southwest corner of the map. You'll quest later from Toshley's Station and from Evergrove.

Alright, let's do this! LEEEROOOOOY NNNJENNNKINNNSSZZHH!!!

Scene 1: Cats and Birds (level 68)

Leave town out the northeast exit, and travel south. Kill every lynx you see along the way. There are just barely 12 of them altogether, so it's important to catch each spawn. When you reach the southern end of The Living Grove, work your way into Veil Lashh and start killing birds. Your goal is to get onto one of the two upper platforms in the Veil to reach the Lashh'an Tome. Once you do, crawl back down to ground level and use your fistful of feathers in one of the arcane circles and then hurry back to town. (Don't get yourself killed, but don't waste time. You only have 10 minutes.)

Quests completed: Malaise, Scratches, The Encroaching Wilderness

Scene 2: Wolves (level 68)

Leave town out the north end again, and this time cross the bridge into Horde territory. (Well, not literally, PvP'ers. But the Horde town is nearby.) There's wolves and chimeras around. Kill wolves as you head south toward the cave the Horde enter the zone through. At the entrance is Rima, the den mother. Kill her, get your four tails, and then head up the slopes to the east where R-3D0 is resting. At the top, you'll find Toshley's Station, town #2. The only quest we'll be doing here for now is the test flight. Talk to Tally, and then Rally, and you'll be put on a little flight back in the direction you came from.

Note about Toshley's Station: Periodically the station comes under attack by throngs of ravagers. Hide in a corner for a few minutes and the town guards will eventually fight them all off. There's little to no point in participating, however all the questgivers become too busy in the action to talk to you.

Return to Sylvanaar.

Quests completed: Marauding Wolves, The Den Mother, Test Flight: The Zephyrium Capacitorium

Flight points: Toshley's Station

Scene 3: Bloodmauls (level 68)

Go south into the grove and click on five of the little shrubs. Return to Sylvanaar to finish Protecting Our Own.

Then head south again and take one of the two ridges that leads down into Bloodmaul Ravine. Around the southern edge of the ravine, you will find a number of ogres, wolves, kegs, and a mine. You have a quest involving each of these four things. Depending on competition, the hardest to get will be the booze. The ogre kill count just takes a while. The other two will finish quickly. Complete all four quests, and return to Sylvanaar. Keep any extra beer you get.

Quests completed: Protecting Our Own, A Dire Situation, Into the Draenethyst Mine, Strange Brew, The Bloodmaul Ogres

Scene 4: Bladespires (level 68)

This will be the final scene out of Sylvanaar.

Head down into the canyon, and go north this time until you reach Bladespire Hold. Stay along the road until you find Vindicator Vuuleen in her cage. Grab her quest, and then start exploring the large buildings for the two ogres she names, Droggam and Mugdorg.

You'll notice that there are 6 buildings shown on the map. Droggam is in the middle-left; Mugdorg is in the lower-right. The trick to luring them out is using the beer. If you put a beer down, one of the two non-elite guards will come. Pull one that way, and then the other, and then stand on the edge of the room and drop a beer to pull the named. He'll come without his sober guards, and you can ambush him there.

The vindicator will send you after one more named guy, Gorr'dim, who is in the upper-left building. Same routine as before. After that, talk to Vuuleen, and then go back up to Sylvanaar. (Well, once you have your 30 kills, anyway.)

Quests completed: The Trappings of a Vindicator, Gorrdim Your Time Has Come, The Bladespire Ogres, Getting the Bladespire Tanked

Scene 5: Crystals (level 68)

Go to Toshley's Station. Sign your waiver for the second flight, and head on down to the Singing Ridge. In theory, the capacitor *should* send you to the south. Once in a while it borks. Gotta do the quest to proceed with Toshley's line either way.

The Singing Ridge consists of Netherdrake nesting grounds, and the crystal flayers that...well, I'm not really sure what they do, but they're all around the eggs. Open up the eggs one at a time, and zap the drake that hatches. Kill whatever it turns into. If you already have 3 of that particular type at that point, zap it again before you finish it off. Oh yeah, kill 10 drakes as well. Then head back to Toshley's.

As a follow-up, return to the Singing Ridge. You only need to be within the area, so just inside it is fine. Clear out a space to work within, and then drop oscillators to "gauge the resonant frequency." This means you'll need to drop 5 thingies in a tight pentagon, and then stand in the center. Occasionally when you drop one, a mob will spawn. Work quickly, you have 3.50 minutes according to the oscillator tooltip.

Quests completed: Test Flight: The Singing Ridge, Crystal Clear, Which Came First? The Drake or the Egg, Gauging the Resonant Frequency

Scene 6: Electromentals (level 68)

Even though there are others left, the remaining quests at Toshley's are all hiding behind one prerequisite, so we'd better go do that. Leave the station up the road to the north for Bladespire Outpost. On the ground around the outpost will be several small canisters. Activate them when the area is clear, zap the "electromental" that spawns with the quest item you were given, and then kill it. Five of them will do, and then back to Toshley's for new quests.

Quests completed: Picking Up Some Power Converters

Scene 7: Wildlife (level 68)

There are three new quests to complete out of Toshley's Station that should pretty well complete our time here. Unfortunately one of these quests is rather annoying. You can range all over with these quests, to the east of the ogres from scene 6, but you need to be watching out for 3 things:

  • Spiders -- The spiders are stealth and lightning quick. They strictly hang out near rock formations, so avoid rocks if you don't want to deal with them, but you need to kill 10.
  • Raptors -- They're all over. Collect some teeth.

  • Snakes -- The wind serpents need to be killed, but you also need to let them zap you while you activate your Repolarized Magneto Sphere. Bring plenty of bandages and food if you don't cast healing spells, because you will need to stand and take a beating.

That's really all there is to these quests. Oh yes, and watch out for Maggoc.

Quests completed: Cutting Your Teeth, Ridgespine Menace, Ride the Lightning

Scene 8: Ethereals (level 68)

Fly to Razaan's Landing by talking to Tally. There are two basic tasks to accomplish in the area. (Well, three, but you did one by teleporting there.)

First, you need to catch the little *purple* floating orb things. The trick to completing this quest is to find where some spawn, clear the area, and constantly lay down your catcher-device-thingy. They won't pick up instantly on the respawn, but they will attract until they are able to be caught again.

However, that can be done while working on the other objective, which can take far longer. Amidst the ethereal are fleshbeasts. You need to kill them until you can get 5 pieces of flesh. The drop rate isn't wonderful considering the amount of work it often is to get to them. Be careful fighting to and around everything in Razaan's Landing. Feel free to drop your Ghostbuster trap as you move.

Return to Toshley's, turn in your quests, and quickly return to Razaan's. You might have noticed a named ethereal walking around. You need to kill him now, and he isn't always up -- he spawns from killing a lot of other ethereal. If you hurry, you can make some use out of your previous work. Or maybe somebody else will be there clearing. Either way, hang out by the central portal, and when it starts to hum and whir and make flashy lights, kill the dude that comes out of it and then loot the object on the ground by his corpse. (If someone else tags him, you can still loot this.)

For good measure, we have one last task before we go back. Head across the street to the Burning Legion camp. You should see pairs of Fel Corruptors walking around. Kill one and loot it for a quest-starting item, Damaged Mask. Go back to Toshley's and do the last teleport quest to send you to Ruuan Wield. Note that you actually have to do something during the flight!

At flight's end, you will be in Evergrove where you can complete the mask quest and pick up many others.

Quests completed: Test Flight Razaan's Landing, Trapping the Light Fantastic, More Than a Pound of Flesh, Show Them Gnome Mercy, Test Flight: Ruuan Weald, Damaged Mask, Mystery Mask

Scene 9: Poachers (level 68)

Evergrove is surrounded by arrakoa to the northeast and poacher camps to the west and north. Go toward to poacher camps (carefully!) and look for Overseer Nuuar to negotiate with. Talk to him, and then return to Evergrove. If you have trouble finding the Overseer, clear out one of the camps and wait for him, since he travels between them.

Now start a circuit of the glade, beginning in the northeast with Veil Ruuan. Kill birds until you have six claws. Then clear the pond with the basilisks and summon the harbinger in the center to get the pendant.

After that, make your way around the area looking for Poachers and Hewers. Poachers are *much* easier to find, and the drop rate on nets is decent, so focus on finding hewers. They're most abundant at the actual camps. Chances are, while killing hewers, you'll also get a "Meeting Note" for a fourth quest on this short circuit you are running. Return to Evergrove and hand them in.

Quests completed: A Time For Negotiation..., ...And a Time For Action, Poaching From Poachers, Did You Get The Note?, Creating the Pendant

Scene 10: Cultists (level 68)

It's time to deal with those irksome cultists again. Head across the Wyrmskull Bridge and talk to Watcher Moonshade. Then head into the tunnel and fight your way up to Draaca Longtail and kill her. Return and you'll be sent out on another mission. Mount up and ride through the tunnel following the upper ridges.

There are numerous quests to tackle in Raven's Wood later on. For now, we have just one quick task to save a later trip. The area in the northeast is called Grishnath, home to a Veil of arakkoa. Kill a couple until you get an orb that starts a quest. The other quest in the area will wait.

Follow the road to the west end of Raven's Wood where the cultist lair is, and fight cultists to get scraps for your costume. Be very careful in this area and only pick off the targets you can get easily, or you might get overwhelmed. In particular, if a cultist kneels down and prays, stun or interrupt them or they will almost fully heal and become a wyrm.

Your goal is to collect costume scraps for an overseer's costume. It takes 5 scraps, so I recommend you actually collect 10. This may sound like strange advise, but even if you don't use the spare costume now, you will want it later.

Use your costume and enter the coven. Snake around the right side of the cave and you will meet up with Kolphis Darkscale. Talk to him, then move a safe distance away from him and start catching whelps with your nets. There are some loose whelps and more in the eggs. There's a healthy number of them at and around Kolphis, so you shouldn't have to fight any of the actual cultists inside if you stay away from the edge. Hearth out.

Quests completed: Wyrmskull Watcher, Longtail is the Lynchpin, Meeting at Blackwing Coven, Whelps of the Wyrmcult, The Truth Unorbed

Scene 11: Bloodmauls, Revisited (level 68/69)

Leave Ruuan Weald by its northern road. As you enter the chasm, you should be right in front of Bloodmaul Camp. Fight your way in, kill some Maulers (and some Warlocks,) go to the top of the main building and kill Dorgok, and then kill some Maulers (and some Warlocks) on the way out. Three quests for the price of two!

Quests completed: A Date With Dorgok, Crush the Bloodmaul Camp, Favor of the Gronn

Scene 12: Baron (level 68/69)

Go head back out into the chasm and toward the Circle of Blood. (It's southwest of Evergrove, right where Dragon's End meets the main canyon.) You'll find Baron Sablemane outside, who will asks you to help him before he helps you help the Alliance guys.

Just to the west is the Churning Gulch where you will find the crust bursters you need to kill. The drop rate ain't great and they like to evade bug, so exercise some patience, but this should still go by pretty quickly. Report back to the Baron for the follow-up.

Grulloc is at the end of the ravine to the east of the arena, Cursed Hollow. Inch close to him, clicking on your sleeping powder as you move closer until it takes, and then sprint for his bag, grab it and move back out. 30 seconds is just long enough to get the bag and get out of combat again. If you're very lucky, there might be a group of level 70s killing him for another quest.

Back to the Baron, and then Evergrove.

Quests completed: Into the Churning Gulch, Good Night Gronn, It's a Trap!

Scene 13: Ravens (level 68/69)

Go back out to Raven's Wood. (That would be the area across the Wyrmskull Bridge and through the tunnel where you did Scene 10.) We have a few potential objectives here.

Find Treebole to begin with, and then head into Grishnath. There are two related quests here, one of which is Whispers of the Raven God, a quest that many people have trouble figuring out or getting to work. Focus on grabbing the five orbs for Treebole's quest, and you can give up on that other one if you choose to. The orbs are groundspawns throughout Grishnath, especially in the treetops.

If you do insist on doing Whispers, the best path to take is to head to the left side of the pond with the basilisks toward where two rope bridges meet. Be VERY careful in this area as there are tons of patrols here. The third prophecy is at the back of the pond, and the first and second prophecies are up those bridges. Do the one on the left first. When you receive the second prophecy, the fourth will just be a little bit to the west and should appear on your radar if you have Understanding Ravenspeech, the buff you get from being near fallen arakkoa. You do -NOT- need to go into the central tree; this only leads to a chest.

After Grishnath, walk around looking for random ravens to kill and combine for exorcism charms to use on leafbeards. Exorcise 5 leafbears and then head back to Treebole to complete the quest. Head into the ogre area in the northwest, Boulder'mok, after that. Kill some ogres, get at least three totems, and then go to the altar and use it. He will die (don't worry) and you can use the totems around the corpse. Finish your kill count and move on to the cultist lair.

Still have that extra costume from scene 10? You're going to need to get into the lair, further back than where you were before. You can either fight your way through, or just use a costume and sneak past everyone, which is much easier considering how much junk is in the way. Just make sure you stop before the Wyrmcult Blessed who see through it and prepare to actually do some fighting. (This is all on the far side of the guy you talked to before.) After the two blessed, you will be ready to fight Maxnar. I wish I could say this is some epic fight from looking at him, but even though he can take a beating, he's nothing special. Kill him and hearth out.

Quests completed: Treebole Must Know, Whispers of the Raven God, Exorcising the Trees, Gorgrom the Dragon-Eater, Slaughter at Boulder'mok, Maxnar Must Die!

Scene 14: Demons (level 69)

From your quest log, drop the quest Felsworn Gas Mask, and then pick it up again from the questgiver. There is an item you get with the quest that has a 60 minute duration, and it should have long since expired.

Put the gas mask itself on and ride out to Forge Camp: Anger up the eastern trail and out to the zone edge. On the ridge above the initial guards is the communicator you will be able to interact with if you have the mask on.

You'll be charged with killing 4 of the Gan'arg and 4 of the Mo'arg around the base. Do that and come back. You'll be given an additional quest that requires a partner. If you don't have a partner, skip the next paragraph.

To summon Doomcryer, you will need to collect 5 keys from the guards and have the area fairly clear, and then access each obelisk in rapid faction. (It's easiest to do when one person doesn't have to hit them all, since they deactivate fairly quickly.) Once Doomcryer is out, tag-team her. It will take 2 or maybe 3 people to kill her, depending on group make-up.

Leave the Forge Camp and head north. You want to kill a corrupter pair and some raptors and wind serpents for Culling the Wild en route to Skald, which is at the far north end of the road, if you were to continue north after the road bends. Approach Skald from the center of the southern edge of the area and *carefully* clear your way northward. This area can get nasty if you rush. In more or less the center of the area should be a patch of dirt. Get near it and plant seeds and you will find this is the "southern" of the three volcanic soils. The other two spots are due north of the southern one, but you have to take slight detours to actually reach them. No, you can't make that jump. Don't aggro 3 mobs trying.

Return to Evergrove.

Quests completed: Felsworn Gas Mask, Deceive Thy Enemy, You're Fired! (maybe), Culling the Wild, From the Ashes, Little Embers

Wrap-up (level 69)

Level 69 and not quite a half...and we're all out of zone. I promised you we would hit 70 without using those other two zones, and it's still possible. Unlikely, but possible. You'll probably want to get started on the Karazhan attunement process, and that requires doing some old world stuff that's fairly high in level. We'll discuss that in Act 24.
