This is a short write-up on how to dress for doing damage as a cloth caster. Druids can also wear this, ofc. This is MY opinion on good, easy-to-get gear for doing damage. Feel free to chime in below; if it's good I'll add it, if it's bad...well, lets leave it at that ;) the gear is selected for raw damage potential, and not so much for survivability and fight-stamina. Most caster classes have ways of mana-regen, and they should use these. Also this is from a group/raid perspective, so you won't get hit on much. You WILL be the glass-cannon you are supposed to be...and you WILL hit hard. Pray you have a good tank. Most of the gear is non-specific, but you would get a bit more damage out of damage-type specific items (+ice damage etc). Mechanics The amount of damage you get from damage gear depends on the casting time of your spell. 3.5 secs takes max advantage of your gear, with anything lower being relative to this (eg. casting time of 2 secs : 2/3.5 = 57% damage from your gear.). Instants count as 1.5 secs (which is the lowest) and DOTs/HOTs (with 5 ticks or more) and channeled spells take full advantage. Spells that heal as well harm take a 50% bonus reduction as well as any reduction due to casting time. Area-effect spells, snares/roots, DD+DOT all have reductions as well. Crit% is weighed heavily on the item-budget and you are usually better off getting +dam instead. The amount of +dam you can get om items will this improve your DPS much than the crit% you can get. Also for locks and shadowpriests, half (for locks) or most (for priests) of your damage come from sources that can't crit, so going crit can be an exercise in futility. Example: Shadowbolt, rank 9 with improved shadowbolt used to its fullest (all 4 sources are used). You may crit after a crit using one of the 4 charges, but that would waste the remaining charges, so in effect it has the same total effect, so I have disregarded this in my calculations. The proper math would be: Base damage: Base hit 93%, crit 10%, 0 damage, 1000 bolts base damage 481 (rank 9) and using imp. SB to the max = 706781 Crit setup: crit 20%, 100 damage, total damage: 1167113. 65% increase (epic heavy) Dam setup: crit 10%, 300 damage, total damage: 1147601. 62% increase (no epics) Minor Epic dam setup: crit 10%, 400 damage, total damage: 1294541. 83% increase Major Epic dam setup: crit 15% 700 damage, total: 2053877. 191% increase Major Epic Crit setup: crit 30% 300 damage, total: 1990144. 179% increase As we can see, you need a lot of crit to make up for the lost damage and do the same damage. You would also have a hard time even getting the +100 damage with the 20% crit, not the mention the extreme lack of stats and getting the crit% itself. When you move in to epics, you will have a very hard getting the extra %crit (+20% in gear? Not gonna happen) and you will find it even harder to get crit AND damage at the same time. Damage is much easier to come by. At low lvls crit gear builds and dam gear builds can do the same damage, but crit gear builds will require a LOT of extra work in terms of getting the gear. At higher lvls it's not even an option to go for crit gear, as an epic crit% on an item is still 2-3% (with no damage and stats), while you readily get 80-100 +dam on gear with stats. And all of this is without non-crittable DOTs in the picture. DOTs get full benefit from +dam gear and none from crit. And DOTs do make a large part of lock damage on high-HP targets. For mages, it looks even worse, since they don't get the 20% increase to damage after a crit. They are even better off going for +dam gear. Winner for locks Arcane Crystal Pendant. Rings: A poor choice of rings until you hit epic lvl. You may get lucky and get some nice BOE items (like Maiden's circle or band of the unicorn), but you will probably have to settle for nice rings with your key stats on them. After 1.11 it's slighty better than ZHC, which is epic. Get it! Royal Seal of Eldre'Thalas, DM trinket gotten from the book-quest in there. http://www.thottbot.com/?i=38514 is the lock one, which is very good. The mage one sucks, but get it for the Fire res on it anyway. Notes on gear: Warlocks and shadowpriests can use Felcloth items, when they are DPS'ing. They give high damage and are VERY easy to get. http://www.thottbot.com/?s=felcloth If you PVP, the Bloodguard pieces are a valid option. They have good stats, medium damage and a nice 3-piece +dam set-bonus
